Conference Sustainability Commitment
At 10th IRSPBL, 7th SASEE & 5th SoTL in the South Conference, we are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and promoting sustainable practices throughout the event. We recognize that conferences have an impact on the environment, and we are taking intentional steps to reduce waste, support responsible sourcing, and encourage sustainable participation.
Reducing Waste & Single-Use Items
- Bring Your Own Lanyard – We encourage attendees to reuse their lanyards from previous events.
- Digital Programs & QR Codes – To minimize paper waste, all event schedules, abstracts, and resources will be available via a mobile app, website, or QR codes instead of printed materials.
- Reusable Water Bottles – We will provide recycled, reusable aluminum water bottles to all attendees, eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles. Refill stations will be available throughout the venue.
- Sustainable Swag or No Swag – Instead of unnecessary giveaways, we are offering digital vouchers and locally made sustainable items sourced from South African businesses that align with ethical and environmental values.
Sustainable Catering & Food Choices
- Vegetarian-First Menu – Our meals will be plant-based by default, significantly reducing the conference’s carbon footprint. Meat options will be available by request.
- Minimizing Food Waste – We will implement portion control strategies and redistribute surplus food to local food banks or shelters, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.
We believe that small, intentional actions lead to meaningful change. By working together as organizers, participants, and partners, we can create a responsible, forward-thinking conference experience that prioritizes both innovation and environmental stewardship.
We invite all attendees to join us in this commitment by embracing these sustainable practices during the event!
