Mamelodi Campus of the University of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria, Mamelodi campus, and anchor institution within the community

Anchor institutions are pivotal entities that significantly impact their local communities through stability, size, and a long-term commitment to local development. Services are delivered by students and staff from various faculties, as well as through collaborations with non-profit organisations. Key initiatives include the Business Hub of the Faculty of Economic Sciences, which offers training for social entrepreneurs, and veterinary services provided by students from the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Additionally, the Consiba Needlework group on campus runs a social entrepreneurship project, while the Faculty of Theology operates the Urban Studio’s Office to foster connections with local church groups and non-profits. Students from the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and IT engage in the compulsory Community-based Project Module (JCP), where they offer basic computer training and contribute to enhancing the existing sensory garden. Furthermore, students from the Faculty of Health Sciences conduct workshops on various health-related topics, including cybersecurity. This visit will explore the myriad projects run at the University of Pretoria, Mamelodi campus, underscoring the institution’s commitment to community engagement, capacity building, and sustainable development and highlighting the transformative potential of anchor institutions in the local social fabric.
